JASPER Uses Automated Data Acquisition in Gas Engine Live-Run Testing

data-acquistion-live-run

Jasper Engines & Transmissions, the nation’s leader in remanufactured drivetrain products, has incorporated automated data acquisition into its gas engine live-run testing program.

The test stands at the Jasper, Indiana, facility are being fitted with computers running a JASPER-written automated test program (using software from National Instruments). Over time, this conversion will occur on live-run test stands at the Crawford County and Willow Springs, Missouri, facilities.

While computer-assisted programs have been used to monitor live-run testing in the past, it was the role of the operator to check the gauges and write down the correct numbers. But the operators are expected to test a predetermined number of engines each day. “The operator prepares one engine for testing while another is being tested on the stand,” says Jacob Adams, JASPER Corporate Engineer. “This can lead to missing that critical engine temperature (145 degrees Fahrenheit) where we need to get our measurements. It only takes a couple degrees for the values to drastically change.”

Once the operator has the test stand ready, the engine is started and run at 1,400 rpm. From the moment the engine starts, the automated data acquisition system monitors critical readings and takes a data snapshot once engine temperature reaches 145 degrees. This can be from as little as five minutes for small 4-cylinder engines, to as-long-as 15 minutes for big-block V8s. “The data acquisition program collects readings on oil temperature, oil pressure, water temperature, vacuum and correct rpm range,” says Adams. “Once the live-run test is complete, the engine is shut down and the system can acquire compression data.”

The automated data acquisition program can shut down an engine during a test should readings exceed pre-determined parameters. “The system is always watching the temperatures and pressures,” says Adams. “So if it sees a spike in water temperature, or a loss of oil pressure, it immediately shuts down the engine, reducing potential damage. The program will also alert the operator as to the reason for the engine shutdown.”

The automated program gives JASPER a good standardization process to all of the live-run test stands. “In the past, using the manual gauges, we could not obtain repeatable results from different gauges on different stands, added Adams. “Borderline engines that would pass live-run testing are now being rejected on the stand, thereby reducing the chance of a customer warranty issue.”

A Pontiac Split Head Six Gets “Authentic”

pontiac-split-61

The Pontiac Split Head six produced 60 horsepower in 1929, up from 40 horsepower in earlier versions. The customer asked for the red paint job on his engine.

Diving deeper into automotive history, the Engine Department of Jasper Authentic Custom Drivetrains recently remanufactured a 1929 Pontiac 200 cubic-inch “Split Head” six cylinder engine. These engines were built between 1926 and 1932, when Pontiac was a branch-off of the old Oakland Motor Car company.

The Split Head had a one-piece cast iron block with three main bearings. Its most unusual feature was the use of two separate cylinder heads, covering three cylinders apiece. The ignition distributor was mounted on top of the block, in the gap between the heads.

Pre-1929 versions of the Split Head were 186 cubic inches; rated at 40 horsepower. For 1929 and later models, the engine displaced 200 cubic inches, producing 60 horsepower.

Obviously, this early drivetrain component is no longer offered, nor does it fit into any production remanufacturing system. That’s where Jasper Authentic Custom Drivetrains comes in.

“One type of client that would benefit from our division, for instance, is the individual restoring a car that’s all-original,” says Alex Ernst, Jasper Authentic Group Leader. “They want the serial numbers to match, or they want their engine to be hand-built by experienced professionals”.

“With Jasper Authentic Custom Drivetrains, we spend extra time remanufacturing an engine or transmission,” Ernst added. “We give the customer that hands-on, hand-built treatment that our target customer base is looking for.”

In addition, Jasper Authentic Custom Drivetrains provides some extras for the enthusiast. “Customers can opt to have their engine dynamometer tested, in addition to the live-run test we perform on most applications,” said Ernst. “And we can provide the customer with documentation of the remanufacturing process.”

Cam Bore Alignment Station Reclaims Ford Modular Heads

Jasper Engines & Transmissions has implemented an operation to remanufacture Ford modular cylinder heads with overhead cams.

An overhead cam bore alignment station has been put in place in the Gas Engine Division of the Jasper, Indiana, facility. At the heart of this station is a Milltronics 7200 CNC machine that centers the head for proper cam bore alignment. The CNC machine takes less time to do the procedure, with improved accuracy, when compared to a manually-operated drawbar boring setup.

Currently, the station’s main focus is the Ford 4.6, 5.4 and 6.8L modular engines with aluminum overhead cam cylinder heads. The station gives JASPER the ability to remanufacture these heads that in the past would not be salvageable.

“The camshaft journals ride in the aluminum bore of the head, and not on an actual bearing,” says Lukas Hetterscheidt, JASPER Gas Engine Quality Control Captain. “Any dirt or debris that gets in between the cam and the head tends to tear up the cam bores and the camshaft itself.”

JASPER’s Indiana Tool & Die Division has the capability to weld up the steel of the camshaft journals to .030 oversize. Meanwhile, heads are taken to the cam bore alignment station where they are align bored to accept the remanufactured camshaft. “It doesn’t have to be the same cam that originally came with the head, but the bore and the journals have to match in size,” says Hetterscheidt. “So if you have a .030 cam, the head must be align bored .030. In some instances, the head is align bored .080 over, and a bearing is inserted so a stock camshaft can be used.”

“Anything that was in poor condition would, in the past, be discarded, and we would run out of core heads or core cams,” added Hetterscheidt. “Now we can save both the cam and the heads. We are always keeping our eyes open for ways to reclaim components, maintaining the highest quality standards and producing the greatest value for our customer.”

In the future, JASPER plans to utilize the cam bore alignment station on 3.7 and 4.7L Chrysler cylinder heads. Hetterscheidt added that similar stations could be implemented in other JASPER facilities where overhead cam engines are remanufactured.
