Timely Tire Tips From The Car Care Council
Two items often missing from a car's glove compartment are basic
ownership tools: the owner's manual and a tire gauge. One has been
described as the most widely published and least read of all American
literature. The tire gauge, more familiar to most motorists, seldom is
found among the lipsticks, credit card stubs and sunglasses generally
found in a (so called) glove compartment.
As emphasized in the Car Care Council's illustrated pamphlet on tires,
if you don't own a tire gauge, put it at the top of your must
buy' list. This inexpensive device measures the air pressure in the
tire, and when used regularly, can save its cost hundreds of times over.
Underinflated tires wear more rapidly at the outer edges; overinflated
tires wear at the center of the tread.
In addition to extending tire life, proper inflation helps save fuel.
An underinflated tire consumed more energy due to its rolling resistance.
It also hampers steering and stability on the road.
Another gauge owned by the more conscientious vehicle owners in a tread
depth gauge. As the term implies, it is used to measure the depth of the
groove in tire's tread. When that measurement is less than 2/32
it is time to replace that tire. Worn tread leads to hydroplaning on rain
covered roads, a phenomenon where the tire actually loses contact with
the road surface. It feels like driving on ice.
Incorrect tire inflation and excessive wear are two of the leading causes
for failure in vehicle check lanes during National Car Care Month (October).
The Council's pamphlet includes information on tire rotation, puncture
repair and wheel alignment. For a free copy send a stamped, self-addressed
envelope to: Car Care Council, 42 Park Drive, Dept. PK98-TIRE, Port

If you change your
own oil, be sure you
dispose of it properly. Take it to where
you bought your oil or to a service
facility that recycles it. The oil filter
should be recycled as well. |
