JASPER Training Center in Operation at Ohio Technical College

Located on the campus of Ohio Technical College (OTC) in Cleveland, Ohio, is the Jasper Engines & Transmissions Training Center. OTC is the premier provider of specialized technical training to students in a wide variety of transportation fields. The JASPER Training Center provides OTC students the opportunity to work on many of the world’s most technologically advanced vehicles, using the latest high-tech computer diagnostic equipment. OTC formed a partnership with JASPER in July 2012 to use its products in the school’s Automotive and Auto-Diesel programs. The ASE/NATEF-Certified Automotive Technology program offers relevant hands-on training over the course of 72 weeks, while the Auto-Diesel program combines the automotive courses with Diesel Equipment Technology. Through the partnership, JASPER provides engines, transmissions and differentials, along with manufacturing, marketing and sponsor support to OTC. Students train on the company’s products during the six-week course held in the JASPER Training Center. The JASPER Training Center consists of five classrooms: three engine labs, one automatic transmission lab and one manual transmission and differential lab. Students learn disassembly, measuring, cylinder honing, how to work with Heli-coil inserts, timing belt installation and proper re-assembly and torque procedures. “We have classes going all the time as part of the Automotive and Auto-Diesel programs,” says Tom King, OTC Vice President of Enrollment Management and Technical Training. “We’ve started a new six-week course eight times since July and we’ve averaged 20 students per class.” The JASPER Training Center also trains students on automatic transmissions in rear and front-wheel drive vehicles, which is covered in car diagnostic testing, as well as transmission removal and reinstallation. In addition, differentials are covered during the manual transmission classes. “The partnership between JASPER and OTC has been very well received,” says King. “It’s been a tremendous opportunity for us to expose students not only to JASPER, but to some of the advanced technologies and training equipment JASPER uses.” “A huge benefit has been sharing some of the technologies and resources JASPER has, which has enhanced OTC’s curriculum for the students,” added King. “The amount of safety training and professionalism JASPER teaches is very beneficial to our students and has become an integral part of OTC’s program.”

Tour participants took the opportunity to park their beautiful cars on the front lawn of the Jasper facility before embarking on a guided tour. Many cars came from Ohio, with some as far as Florida, North Carolina and Montana. The JASPER stop was part of a week-long "Shades of the Past" driving tour, which began in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, on September 8th and will wrap up at a National Street Road Association event in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on September 15th. The trip also included stops at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, the Studebaker National Museum in South Bend and the Gilmore Car Museum near Kalamazoo.

Representative Todd Young Visits Jasper Facility

Rep. Young Pic1                   U.S. 9th District Representative Todd Young shakes hands with Steve Knust during a meeting with Associates at the Jasper Facility. U.S. 9th District Representative Todd Young visited the Jasper Facility in early August. Young represents Jasper's neighboring congressional district and sits on the House Ways and Means Committee. Rep. Young was greeted by JASPER President and COO Zach Bawel, Chairman and CEO Doug Bawel, and other senior leadership members. They toured the production facility, then had the opportunity to sit down with five JASPER Associates: Joyce Kaltenbacher, Lori Skomp, Steve Knust, Alex Ernst and T.J. McAtee to discuss the benefits of the company's Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). These benefits were expressed in a recent study by Alex Brill, CEO of the consulting firm Matrix Global Advisors. The study found that Associate-Owned companies are not only more profitable and productive, but also more resilient during economic fluctuations compared to the general private sector. After speaking with Associates, Rep. Young, who has already voiced his support for ESOPs at a Ways and Means Committee hearing this year, shared that he would support ESOPs in tax legislation when it comes before the Committee as a part of comprehensive tax reform. Rep. Young is the third member of Congress to visit a JASPER facility this year. In January, the Jasper facility hosted Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly. In July, Missouri Congressman Jason Smith visited the Willow Springs, MO facility.
