Fundraiser is a Sweet Success

2014 Pie in the Eye

Thumbs up from third-place contestant Sara Schmidt

Today marked the finale of the Jasper Engines Team #77's sixth annual Pie in the Eye fundraiser. As in the past, this event took place at high noon in the Jasper facility's north parking lot. JASPER Associates paid a quarter per vote to see their favorite three of twelve participants get a "pie in the eye." For the second year in a row, the Indiana Tool and Die division provided the number one pick.

Chris Hochgesang was voted as this year's grand champion, followed by Michael Lamkin of the Sales Department and rounding out third was Sara Schmidt, the Transmission Division Manager. There was even an independent competition within the fundraiser between Maria Ramirez and Josh Budd for a forth pie. This two-week event raised a grand total of $1,674 for the Dubois County Relay for Life, a good start for their $15,000 goal. Thanks to all who participated and donated to this worthy cause.

Chesapeake Bay Fishing with JASPER Customers

Date: Thursday 5/8/14

The day started at 3:30 a.m. at the Christiana Mall in Newark, DE, where we all met to van-pool to the marina. Tom Wizda said, "On an overcast day, the fish really bite." How little did he know how true his statement would turn out to be.

We arrived at the marina in Chesapeake Beach, MD a little after 6 a.m. and set out on the 50' Bay Hunter. The mate had barely cast six lines when Tom Wizda landed the first rockfish of the day! The captain's excellent fish finding skills had us pulling in up to three fish at a time. All keepers, no less. Dan Pizzuto had the feistiest fish. It gave him a great fight and almost wiggled its way off the boat. Doug Durkee and Jeff Weigle helped the mate by manning the net during the furious fishing frenzy.

We trolled the Bay for a while for some catch and release while enjoying a "little boat ride," said Craig Hessenauer. The boat docked, the fish were filleted and we headed to a local restaurant to enjoy some lunch while discussing important issues facing shop owners today.

Memories were made that will not be forgotten.

Over a Hundred Pints Donated and Counting...

Annual JASPER Blood Drive

That's right! Thus far, JASPER Associates have donated over 100 pints of blood in the last two days! Jasper Engines & Transmissions is once again hosting blood drives for the American Red Cross at not just one, but all three remanufacturing facilities. Donations from the Crawford facility's single-day and Jasper's two-day event have produced a combined total of 128 pints with the Willow Springs drive scheduled for tomorrow.

Here are some interesting facts about blood donations:
•  An average adult has about 10 pints of blood and roughly one pint is given during a donation
•  Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood
•  The actual blood donation typically takes less than 10-12 minutes
•  A single donation can save up to three lives.

Thanks again to all of our Great JASPER Associates who have or will be donating. This is just another example of how our Associates are "Doing it Right!"

JASPER Balloon Finishes 1st in Derby Balloon Race

2014 Kentucky Derby Balloon Race_1

Pilot Warren Smith prepping the Jasper Engines & Transmissions Balloon before flight!

The Kentucky Derby Great Balloon Race was held this past Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky. Pilot briefing began at 5:00 AM and we were given the green light for flight! We drove out to Bowman field. The field of 31 balloons was ready to race. This was to be a hare and hound race. Just before 7:00 AM, we started our inflation.

A very good crowd was on hand for this early morning flight. The surface wind was light and out of the south. Only 200’ up, the winds switched around to be out of the west and were at 29 mph. The hare balloon flew about 7.5 miles to the east and landed in Tom Sawyer State Park. The “X” target was laid out on the RC airplane field. Around half of the balloons scored on the target. The Jasper Engines & Transmissions Balloon had a very good throw on the target.

The Awards Banquet was held at noon to honor all of the teams. The Jasper Engines & Transmissions Balloon was honored with a first place finish, beating out the United States Champion and the current World Champion. By winning first place, the Jasper Engines and Transmissions Balloon receives an automatic entry into next year’s race.

Jasper Engines and Transmissions Expansion of Manufacturing Operations

JASPER Transmission Expansion Announcement

Jasper Engines & Transmissions CEO Doug Bawel (left), Lt. Govenor Sue Ellspermann and Jasper Mayor Terry Seitz announced JASPER's plan to expand manufacturing operations locally, adding 235 new jobs.

Official Release:

Jasper, Indiana (April 30, 2014) – CEO Doug Bawel joined state and local officials in announcing the company’s plans to expand its footprint in Jasper, Indiana, to create additional jobs and reinvest in the former Kimball Plastics manufacturing facility located at 1220 Power Drive in Jasper, Indiana.

“Jasper Engines & Transmissions is a great Indiana economic success story. The company that has prospered and provided thousands of jobs for Hoosiers for over 70 years is expanding again,” said Lt. Gov. Ellspermann. “We continue to see how our business-friendly tax and regulatory policies plus our dedicated workforce make Indiana a place where companies want to expand and locate. Our record-breaking job growth shows that Indiana truly is a state that works.”

The homegrown-Hoosier company, which remanufactures drivetrain components, plans to invest $6.9 million to renovate and equip a 220,000 sq. foot facility presently vacant within ½ mile of its current 367,000 square-foot facility at 815 Wernsing Road in Jasper. The additional facility will become the new home of JASPER’S Transmission Division which includes disassembly, machining, assembly, testing and warehousing of automotive drivetrain components. Bawel said they plan to be fully operational this fall.

JASPER currently employs more than 2,600 Associates throughout the United States, including more than 1,445 in Indiana. The company has already begun advertising for positions in manufacturing, maintenance, information technology, distribution, engineering and quality control positions in Jasper.

“When looking at our options for expansion, no other place measured up to the business climate in Indiana,” said Doug Bawel, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of JASPER. “Jasper Engines and Transmissions is growing at a high rate and this expansion is thanks to our hard-working Associates and our company’s dedication to excellence in producing our products. This is Phase One of the approval needed for this project as we now await Phase Two which is the City of Jasper’s approval of local real and personal tax abatement. We are excited to grow production here, and are very hopeful, with the State taking the lead, we can bring this project to fruition quickly.”

Jim Thyen, President and CEO of Kimball International, stated "This transaction is clearly a "Win-Win" scenario for everyone: Kimball, Jasper Engines and Transmissions, and the local community. We are extremely happy that we could reach agreement with a local company who we know to be a long-time, good corporate citizen in the community. JASPER’s expansion sends a strong message about the viability of this industrial area and our community's openness to economic development."

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Jasper Engine Exchange, Inc. up to $1,150,000 in conditional tax credits and up to $200,000 in training grants based on the company’s job creation plans. These tax credits are performance-based, meaning until Hoosiers are hired, the company is not eligible to claim incentives. The project is contingent upon Jasper Engines and Transmissions receiving real and personal property tax abatement from the City of Jasper.

Sara has worked in the Crawford Transmission Division, Transmission Division Manager at Willow Springs, Missouri, DOJO Manager, and most recently, Division Manager of Jasper Certified Components.

“I am both honored and excited to join the transmission team as we continue building upon its long standing reputation of remanufacturing high-quality products,” said Schmidt. “As JASPER continues on its journey to be the Brand of Choice to our customers, and the Company of Choice to our current and future Associate-Owners, we look for leaders with cross-functional experiences willing to develop processes, develop people and lead change,” said John Schroeder, JASPER Vice President of Drivetrain Remanufacturing. “Both Craig and Sara have proven track records of success and we are confident they will do well in their new roles.
